About the Artist

Yeri Hwang has been doing art since she was a kid and she loves that it can connect with other people. She is in her last semester at CSULB and will be getting her BA in Studio Art. After she graduates she wants to continues working on interactive art and explore the different areas that  animation and illustration open to her, such as making movies.

Formal Analysis

This artwork was interactive and there were many different kinds of media used. Electronics were used in almost all of them so that there was movement or some kind of light. No two pieces were the same, one was made from latex and was soft while one had broken pieces of mirror scattered about it which made it look sharp and bright.

Content Analysis

Hwang gets the feeling that art is kind of limited to those that have a background in art and would like to use her art to broaden the range of people that get to see it and interact with it, which is why she makes interactive art. She uses electronics, different media, and mythology to show the different stages that people go through in life. At first, she didn’t see this exhibition as a journey though life, but as it progressed she started to make the connections between all the pieces and see how they all were part of a whole. This resonates with how life is because you can’t always see how everything is connected until you see the bigger picture with all the parts.

Synthesis / My Experience

This exhibition was a very good portrayal of our journey through life because it wasn’t just looking at pictures on a wall, it was going through it all and touching things and seeing how each piece represented the next step and the next step until you got to the end where the last piece asked you to forgive yourself. Some might not think that self forgiveness is needed, but everyone has to forgive themselves for something because we’ve all made mistakes and we’re not perfect and that’s ok. Even if it’s just forgiveness for having flaws and not always making the ideal decision, it’s needed because that’s life and there’s nothing we can do about it so we might as well get over ourselves and enjoy it.
